This project began in 2012, thanks to a Focal Point grant from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Graduate College.
The grant funding supported a year long seminar, including monthly discussion groups and several panel presentations. The seminar specifically focused on the unique methodological challenges and opportunities inherent in conducting research with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations. Our goal was to develop an interdisciplinary, collaborative group at the intersection of research, practice, and policy.
The inaugural symposium was hosted in Champaign, IL in May 2013, as a capstone event to conclude the research seminar. Participants from across the country voiced appreciation for the opportunity to attend an interdisciplinary conference with a substantive focus. Based on the success of our first year, we have worked to continue the conference as an annual.
